Obituary for Edwin Dean

Edwin (Ed) W. Dean, of Atlanta, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home with loved ones, on July 21, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Ed was born April 4, 1936 in Belvidere, Illinois. He was the oldest son of Edwin W. Dean Sr. and Ruth Alden Dean, and brother to Professor Dennis Dean of Evanston, IL. The family located from Illinois to Inglewood, California in 1946.

Ed attended Paris – Sorbonne University, the University of Missouri, and graduated from Stanford University in 1959. During his time at Stanford, Ed was in the US Army Armor/Cavalry School, AB Journalism, and president of Sigma Delta Chi. He was a member of the Stanford Racing Team, the first college sports car racing team in history.

Ed was a Captain in the U.S. Army, serving two combat tours in Vietnam. He also served as a Tank Commander in Germany. During his military career, he received numerous awards and commendations.

After his military career, Ed became owner/editor/publisher of multiple newspapers in the Los Angeles area. He served as president of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, member of the Jonathan Club, Man of the Year, and among the first journalists allowed into Communist China.

After a fast paced career, Ed retired and moved to a gentler life in N.E. Texas. He focused on hobbies including his love for the railroad. He traveled to Colorado and surrounding areas often, and built a fabulous model of the Colorado Midland Railroad centered around Cripple Creek and Silverton. He was a long standing member and supporter of the Colorado/Midland Railway Club.
Ed was a world traveler and visited countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Africa, Great Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Egypt, Greece, Turkey and many others. Ed loved traveling throughout the United States, but his love was to follow the gold and silver mines in Colorado and California. Although Ed loved his travels, he always enjoyed coming back to his home in N.E. Texas.

Ed grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Inglewood, California. Upon moving to N.E. Texas, he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Texas.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edwin W. Dean, Sr. and Ruth Alden Dean.

Ed is survived by his wife, Sue Dean, of Atlanta, Texas. One brother, Professor Dennis Dean of Evanston, IL, three children, Gwendolyn A. Dean; Dianna D. Dean; and Edwin W. Dean, III. Two step daughters, Corina Long (Lance) and Laura Witt (Bryan). Five grandchildren, Nakora Dean-Kowal, Reece Dean-Kowal, Cheyenne Wilson, Samantha Wilson, and Kaitlynn Witt.

A private family service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Ed’s honor to Alzheimer’s Alliance of Greater Texarkana 903-223-8021, www.alztristate.org or a favorite charity.
