Obituary for Samuel Clinton "Uncle Sam" Wadsworth, Jr.

Samuel Clinton “Uncle Sam” Wadsworth, Jr., of Atlanta, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, December 4, 2017.

He was born on March 28, 1929 to Sam and Stella Wadsworth near Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Sam was a hard-working, fun loving, patriotic, Christian, family man who left an indelible mark on this world. He loved sports, his country, his family, and his community of friends. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and worked for 33 years at International Paper Co. He was an active member of Law’s Chapel Methodist Church and the VFW, Commander and Parade Chairman for the American Legion, and was voted Man of the Year of Atlanta in 2002. He was known in the community as “Uncle Sam”, appearing in numerous parades and events to support and educate others about patriotism. Sam was always happy to pitch in for a good cause and usually with a good sense of humor. Sam is preceded in death by his brother, Norman, and sisters, Melba (Nicholson) Richter, Betty Montgomery, Gertrude Moser, and a step-son, Dean Bradford. His last surviving sister, Alma St. John joined him two days later, on December 6.

Sam is survived by his wife, Peggy, of 40 years; son, Sam (Jean) Wadsworth; granddaughter, Mary Scarborough; grandson, Max (Emily) Wadsworth; and many loving great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Sam wished that his body be donated to science; so, there will be no burial. Instead, the family wishes that we celebrate his life at a memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Atlanta on Saturday, January 6 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

Visitation will be Friday, January 5, 2018, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hanner Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heritage Hospice in Atlanta or Laws Chapel Methodist Church.

A special thank you to Heritage Hospice in Atlanta and Dr. Lloyd Fruge for their loving care and sincere support. They are truly angels on earth.
