Obituary for Charles Edward Whitehead

Charles Edward Whitehead, 80 year old beloved father and friend, passed away on July 11, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born on July 22, 1936 in Genoa, Arkansas and will be laid to rest on the same day, 81 years later. Charles was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and carried on his boiler operator experience into civilian life by retiring from Day and Zimmerman Army Ammunition Plant. Charles also owned Genoa Plastering and Tile and worked in various professions such as land and timber through out his lifetime.
Charles enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, tending to animals, or simply appreciating nature. History was a great passion for Charles, and every opportunity he had to show his family a monument or museum, he took it. He is remembered by one brother as traveling across the country in train cars and hitchhiking as young men so they could experience the land. Later in life, he loved to watch documentaries while drinking coffee with his son and grandson, continuing his legacy of history and education. He also understood the importance of staying active and was well known at a local gym as one of the oldest members. Singing and playing the guitar with friends and family, usually on the bank of Red River around a bonfire, was one of his greatest joys.
Charles loved with all his heart. As miles and schedules separated him from his children, he made many road trips and phone calls to keep close. He made it a priority to visit as many friends as he could daily, all while never understanding why people were in such a hurry to pass him on the road. His personality was bold; his love for life, family, and friends was soft, sweet, and never in doubt by those that knew him. Charles attended Solid Rock Church and loved to tell others of the power of Christ in his life.
Charles is survived by his former wife, Gail Newsome of Genoa, Arkansas; along with five children, David and Richanna Whitehead of Genoa, Arkansas, Troy Whitehead and Casey Nickens of Fort Worth, Texas, Robert and Tiffani Whitehead of Genoa, Arkansas, Tonya and Scott Wedelstat of Lebanon, Missouri, and Rebecca Whitehead of Dallas, Texas. He was also the proud grandfather to Haylea and Justin Morgan, Miranda Wilcox, Mattie Whitehead, and Preston Whitehead. He also leaves behind four brothers and many other family members and friends. Charles is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald Whitehead and Wayne Whitehead.
Graveside services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Shiloh Cemetery, Texarkana, Arkansas, officiated by Brother Wallace Edgar under the direction of Hanner Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Charles' name to Pets for Vets, an organization that matches shelter animals with impaired veterans returning home from service, by going to www.petsforvets.com. The family will be at the home of Robert and Tiffani Whitehead after the service to share memories of Charles’ life.
